Should I Choose Injectables or a Facelift?

Thoughtful model in studio looking awayIt can be difficult to determine which facial enhancement procedure you need. Many people assume the best technique is based on their age rather than the issues they present with. Facial aging develops for a number of reasons, and the cause of your problems will indicate the best solution. While a plastic surgeon should always evaluate your aesthetic needs, understanding whether injectables or a facelift is right for you will place you on the right treatment path.

You Have Wrinkles or Volume Loss

A reduction of collagen and elastin in your facial tissues causes wrinkles and volume loss. When this occurs in the lower face, it typically results from a decreased production of those cells. This loss presents itself as smile lines, laugh lines, or lip lines. As you move up the face, the decrease in collagen can display itself as hollows in the cheeks. In the upper profile, repetitive muscle movements create crow’s feet, brow lines, or forehead wrinkles.

Choose Injectables

Injectables are the best treatment if you don’t present laxity but have wrinkles or volume loss. There are a variety of non-surgical injectable options, depending on the location of your aging issues. Dermal fillers improve localized lines in or volume loss to the cheeks, mouth, and nose. Upper facial wrinkles, instead, can be treated with neurotransmitter inhibitors, like BOTOX® Cosmetic. This injectable relaxes the facial muscles that cause the formation of wrinkles.

Your Facial Features Are Sagging

For many patients, this droop is caused by a weakening of the facial muscles, and this requires a deeper, more dramatic correction. In aggressive cases of aging, jowls form along the jawline.

Choose Facelift

Facelift surgery is the most effective method of reversing facial laxity. This surgery addresses concerns on both the skin and muscular levels. Through small incisions, your muscles are elevated and held in place with sutures. Excess skin is trimmed away from the jawline. If necessary, a neck lift is performed to eliminate the appearance of a turkey wattle.
